Fleet Check List
Its simple really, if you answer no to any of the following questions, you could be operating outside the Health and Safety guidelines for companies with five or more staff and therefore leaving yourself open to litigation.
Policy Has your organisation a written, signed, and dated Health and Safety Policy, which includes clear objectives and a commitment to improving driver safety performance.
Risk Assessment Are risk assessments undertaken and reviewed on all employee travel risks in line with the requirements of Company Policy.
Legal Compliance Does your organisation comply with all relevant corporate and regulatory requirements (such as corporate manslaughter and board reporting).
Organisational Leadership and Culture Does your company structure allow for co-operation, communication and the cross flow of information throughout departments with regard to Road Risk Policy.
Journey Management Does your organisation review travel requirements to minimise road risk and to encourage compliance with speed limits, working time regulations, road safety laws.
Driver Recruitment Do all new employees receive a formalised and recorded induction which covers company policy, equipment familiarisation, emergency procedures, vehicle checking/maintenance and the importance of safety.
Driver Supervision, Monitoring, Assessment and Improvement Are there systems in place to maintain appropriate driver records, including copies of employment applications, medical/health information, licence checks, training records and qualifications as well as collision history.
Employee Well-being Is there an appropriate programme in place for new and existing staff, including health, stress, fatigue, drugs, alcohol and mobile phone use.
Vehicle Selection, Maintenance and Use Is there a clear vehicle selection, maintenance and replacement policy covering vehicle construction, driver and vehicle safety including weekly/monthly checks, fuel efficiency and environmental performance standards.
Specific Risks Are policies and procedures in place to manage specific areas of risk such as reversing safety, temporary and agency labour and employees driving their own vehicle for work purposes.
